BUTT UGLY MARTIANS (2001)

an American computer-animated television series, which aired on the Nickelodeon cable channel between 2001 and 2002.

The Butt-Ugly Martians (B.U.M.) are forced to invade planets for the evil Emperor Bog. When they are sent to Earth they become addicted to American culture, deciding not to hurt the earth and simply pretend to be occupying the planet for Bog. They are shown around by their new Earthling friends: Mike, Cedric, and Angela. The Butt-Ugly Martians will continue to hang out on Earth as long as Emperor Bog never finds out.

Why was it forgotten?: NOBODY LIKED IT.

I’m not happy. Well, I am happy that I finally got my driver’s license today, but I’m not happy that this is how I chose to celebrate it. This cartoon has been lauded across the internet as probably the worst thing to have ever been produced by Nickelodeon. It’s been called one of the worst cartoons of all time, and one that nobody seems to have any fond memories of.

To put things in perspective this is the single most requested cartoon I’ve ever had in the two years I’ve had this blog. Very few, if any cartoons have been requested half as much as this show. I almost didn’t want to feature it for that exact purpose; people do remember it, they just remember hating it.

Why is it hated so much?

Well first, let me explain that this show came out around the same time as Invader Zim and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Basically, the market for people who enjoyed cartoons about silly aliens, and those who enjoyed CG heavy cartoons was already filled. This had no audience, none, zip, zero. If there was any audience then they would be quickly put off by the show’s ugly character designs, boring visuals, terrible script, and boring action turned them away.

Trust me when I say that all of the complaints you’ve ever heard about this series are totally un-exaggerated, it is all seriously that bad. I could go on forever about the visuals and how things including characters either lack texture or have really bad textures but the killer is certainly the writing.

The way the characters do random, dumb things, and the way they speak I’m almost inclined to believe this show was trying to be another rip-off of the 80′s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The only problem is they’re about 20 years too late, the lingo they use is stale and the humor is so ridiculously– well, humorless. The jokes feel exactly like the kind of humor that’s stereotyped to Nickelodeon; childish,  and vaguely vulgar.

What I hate most about this series more so than just about any other cartoon I’ve featured here is that the three main aliens are all voiced by

Charlie Schlatter

Jess Harnell, and

Rob Paulsen.

Why?

WHY?!

As if three of my favorite voice actors characterizing these idiotic, lame ass aliens weren’t bad enough, it gets worse. Nickelodeon REALLY BACKED THIS SERIES HARD. They  commissioned multiple video games, a toy line, t-shirts, a Burger King tie-in, and had mascot costumes made for live shows.

There are way worse cartoons out there but for the sheer fact that Nickelodeon put in so much money, so much advertising, and so much promotional material into this– I’m going to call it ONE OF THE WORST CARTOONS I’VE EVER SEEN.

TRIVIA

  • There were also three video games based on the series named Butt Ugly Martians: Zoom or Doom for PlayStation 2, Butt-Ugly Martians: B.K.M. Battlesfor Game Boy Advance, and Butt-Ugly Martians: Martian Boot Camp for PC.
  • BKM stands for Butt Kicking Mode.
  • there was a line of toys produced by Hasbro

CLOSING THOUGHTS

We’ve reached a big milestone today, Badlanders.

We finally got the most requested cartoon in the Cartoon Badlands– I hope I did the  justice it deserved. I don’t feel like I did, but for now, let’s let it rest in pieces

Dang this was the show that most often stole Invader Zim’s time slot unexpectedly, too.  Somehow Nickelodeon thought THIS was the alien show worth flooding the schedule with, not IZ.

The only “good” I remember coming out of this travesty was the sheer number of self-insert fanfics on Fanfiction.net involving various IZ authors banding together with the IZ cast to destroy it either by somehow attacking the characters (IZ and BUM exist in the same universe, what?) or by attacking Nickelodeon directly for favoring BUM over IZ.  That was always fun to watch.
